All-on-4 Dental Implants
What are All-on-4 Implants?
All-on-4 technology refers to placing four strategically planned implants to keep prosthesis for a full set of upper or lower teeth in place. The number and position of implants depend upon the density of the bone and how much bone is available. Most patients receive four implants on the bottom arch, and four to six on the top arch. The procedure is safe, easy and most implants heal fully in four to six months. If there are teeth to be extracted, it can be done in the same visit, or prior to implant placement.Using 3-D technology and pre-surgical planning the implant sites are chosen strategically, mostly utilizing the patient's existing bone to reduce the number of implants and bone grafting.
Why would All-on-4 Implants be needed?
You may want All-on-4 implants if your current prosthesis is constantly slipping and falling out. Likewise, your prosthetic appliance might be uncomfortable or ill-fitting, causing you to feel pain or discomfort whenever you insert it in or take it out. The All-on-4 treatment option involves the use of dental implants and a custom fabricated full bridge of teeth. The implants easily keep the prosthesis in place so that it won't slip or budge. This allows for a more natural and realistic-looking smile. The use of 3-D technology and pre-surgical planning allow for a less invasive procedure, easier recovery, and reduced treatment cost.
Who's a good candidate for All-on-4 Implants?
The procedure is the optimal solution for providing a full fixed bridge for patients missing the majority of their teeth and/or with remaining hopeless teeth. Most patients who want All-on-4 implants can safely have the procedure done. Patients jaw structures vary. A thorough evaluation, including a CT scan, is needed to determine if a patient is a good candidate for this replacement option. Keep in mind that implants rely on healthy underlying bone mass to bond fully. Because of the design of a fixed prosthesis, meticulous attention should be paid to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent gum inflammation and bone loss around the supporting implants.
What happens during the procedure for All-on-4 Implants?
We will discuss your sedative options so that we can provide you with the comfortable experience you expect. As the procedure is lengthy, patients can opt to have the procedure done under IV sedation for full relaxation. Incisions are made through the gums to expose the planned implant sites. If there are teeth to be removed, the extractions are done at this point followed by the placement of implants in the pre-planned positions. The gum is sutured in place and a follow up appointment will be made to assess your progress. A temporary prosthesis will be inserted and adjusted to use during the healing phase. Over the course of about three to six months, your implants will naturally begin to fuse with the surrounding bone and become secure, stable and virtually permanent. At that point, your dentist can place your custom fabricated full bridge and adjust it to your bite.
