RIdge Augmentation
What is Ridge Augmentation?
Ridge augmentation is a common surgical procedure performed to help restore the natural contour of the jawbone. It refers to a bone grafting technique used to replace lost bone tissue and promote natural bone growth. The procedure is intended mostly for the insertion of dental implants, but it can be done to improve the cosmetic appearance and functionality of other tooth replacement options.
Why is Ridge Augmentation needed?
The jawbone deteriorates as a result of tooth loss, gum disease, infection, trauma, wearing dentures, or developmental problems. Regardless of the cause of tooth loss, having teeth removed can eventually have an impact on the bone underneath. Usually, the longer the tooth has been missing, the greater the bone loss, making the bone too thin to support a dental implant. Implants need a strong foundation for successful anchorage and function. Ridge augmentation is indicated to recreate adequate bone so that implants can be securely placed.
Who is a candidate for Ridge Augmentation?
We will perform a thorough exam and review x-rays and/or CT scans to determine if you need a ridge augmentation. There are various techniques for regenerating bone based on multiple factors, such as the area of the mouth and the volume of the bone that needs regeneration. Ridge augmentation may need to be done before implants are placed. Healing time varies by patient and the size of the area repaired, but generally lasts between four and six months. For many patients, depending on the quantity of their bone, implant placement and ridge augmentation can be done simultaneously in a single visit. Once your information is analyzed, a treatment plan is developed, and the right approach for your specific case is recommended.
What happens during Ridge Augmentation?
The first step is to consult with you and determine what type of bone material and technique is right for your needs. We only use sterile materials from accredited tissue banks that follow the highest safety rules with the most predictable long-term data. To ensure your comfort, we use a strong local anesthetic to numb the area of your mouth we are treating. Additionally, some patients may prefer to have sedation of their choice to be more relaxed. A small incision is made in the gum tissue to gently separate it from the bone. The bone graft material is placed in the deficient area, and a bone growth factor may be applied to the area to help the bone blend better with the surrounding bone. The gum is sutured in place and a follow up appointment will be made to assess your progress.
