WHAT IS POCKET REDUCTION?

Patients with progressing gum disease may benefit from pocket reduction treatment. This procedure works by accessing gingival pockets around your teeth and cleaning the calcified tartar buildups underneath the gum tissue. The bacteria embedded in the tartar buildups are responsible for releasing toxins and causing inflammation of the gums and jawbone. Once this viscous cycle is interrupted, your body's immune system will be given a chance again to heal itself by shrinking and sealing the pockets around your teeth.

WHY IS POCKET REDUCTION RECOMMENDED?

As gum disease progresses, the pockets around teeth become deeper and collect even more bacteria, thus making it more difficult for your toothbrush, floss, or even the dental instruments used during your professional cleanings to reach them. In these situations, surgery may be indicated to remove bacteria more effectively in order to restore healthy gums and facilitate oral hygiene practices.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING POCKET REDUCTION?

To ensure your comfort, we use a strong local anesthetic to numb the area of your mouth we are treating. Additionally, some patients may prefer to have sedation of their choice to be more relaxed. After anesthesia has taken effect, a small incision is made to separate the gums from the teeth. The outer gum tissue is gently folded back to give access to the roots and the supporting tissues. Once the calcified tartar build up and inflamed gum tissue are thoroughly cleaned, the incision is closed and the procedure is completed. We will guide our patients how to care for their gums after the initial recovery, which happens remarkably fast. Additionally, we will communicate your progress with your dentist, hygienist, and other members of the dental team.
